Job Details

The Library Assistant supports daily operations at the circulation desk and throughout the library, helping patrons find materials and information, maintaining the collection, and assisting with programs and events. This is a public-facing role suited to someone organized, service-oriented, and comfortable with both people and technology.
Key Responsibilities
Patron services
• Check materials in and out; register new patrons and update account records
• Process holds, renewals, fines, and interlibrary loan requests
• Answer directional and basic reference questions; refer complex research inquiries to a librarian
• Help patrons use catalogs, databases, e-book platforms, printers, and public computers
Collection maintenance
• Shelve returned materials accurately and read shelves for order
• Process new arrivals: labeling, covering, stamping, and adding to the catalog
• Perform basic repairs and identify items for withdrawal or replacement
• Assist with inventory and shelf-reading projects
Programs and outreach
• Set up spaces and materials for storytimes, workshops, and community events
• Assist with displays, book lists, and seasonal promotions
• Track attendance and other program statistics
Administrative
• Open and close the library according to established procedures
• Maintain supply inventories and place orders as directed
• Compile circulation reports and other routine statistics
• Enforce library policies courteously and consistently
Qualifications
Required
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Strong customer service skills and clear written and verbal communication
• Comfort with computers, standard office software, and learning new systems
• Attention to detail, particularly with alphabetical and numerical filing
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
