Khokhloma (or Hohloma, Russian: хохлома) is a traditional 17th-century Russian folk art handicraft featuring ornate decorative painting on wooden tableware, furniture, and household objects.

History & Origins
• Origin: Appeared in the second half of the 17th century in the forest villages of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (near the Volga River and the village of Khokhloma).
• Tradition: Legend suggests the technique was brought or developed by Old Believers and icon painters fleeing religious persecution, who adapted sacred icon-gilding methods for everyday wooden crafts.
• Centers of Production: Modern production and historical preservation are centered around the town of Semyonov (known as the "Capital of Khokhloma") and the village of Kovernino.
